Spore, what a letdown...

I was actually excited for this game, up until I found out it was using SecuROM. Now I want to avoid it like the plague. I'd sooner have unprotected anal sex with a thousand aids-infested men than install that trash on my computer.
Seriously, why would a company even want to go near SecuROM? How can you expect to boost sales? It's such a horrid idea... Here's your game, oh but
1. You HAVE to have an internet connection in order to play it the first time so we can verify that it is legit on our servers 2. You can ONLY install it 3 times.
Let me break this shit down...
Internet Connection Issues Let's take a second to think about this here. Imagine you're moving up north, or somewhere without ready access to the internet. You've got a decent computer, and you're looking for a fairly good game that's got some neat ideas behind it. You look at a game like Spore, and you want to play it. I mean, it's a game that offers no multiplayer, which is great, right? No need for the internet to have fun to play it, but oh shit wait, I need the internet so it can send a minuscule hash over to the licensing server to verify that my recently purchased game is legit. Fuck, sucks to be you.
Now, having said that, the internet is really only needed for this security method so that a server can kinda go big-brother on your ass and ensure that you are always using a legit copy, I believe the publisher can set how many days a check is done. This is fine. You're not bothered by DRM, and it's a pretty good game you've just bought, whatever that SecuROM game is. So lets say like 10 years down the road you decide to go back to this game again. You've only installed it once before, so that won't go against the "3 install" rule. Cool, right? Well... not necessarily. What if the company takes the server down? You're fucked. Enjoy your $50 piece of garbage.
3 Install Rule How can that even be considered right? I reformat my computer at least 3 times a year, that said I'd probably have to buy a new copy of the game at least once a year. The 3 install rule doesn't mean 3 simultaneous installs, it means you can use that CD key 3 times and after that, you can just throw out your CD. Enjoy contributing to the current waste issues of this planet. You get to throw out an otherwise perfectly good copy of this CD. There are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many reasons why you may have to re-install a game. I'm not sure, but I've got a good feeling this also includes re-installs. Like, you run out of space, so you un-install the game and you go to install it later.
Now, having said this, there is apparently a way to get more installs. To do that, you basically have to call the company (ie: EA Games) and tell them WHY you need another install, and you have to prove that you own a legit copy of the game you're trying to re-install, and it's pretty much up to them to decide whether or not you are worthy. You'd better have one hell of a good sob story.
But there is some good out of all this. Just like every other waste-of-time encryption, secuROM has been cracked... multiple times. So the next question comes up:
WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU BUY A GAME THAT YOU CAN ONLY INSTALL 3 TIMES, AND NEED TO HAVE THE INTERNET JUST TO VERIFY WHEN YOU CAN DOWNLOAD A CRACKED COPY FOR FREE OFF THE INTERNET AND BE MORE SURE THAT IT WON'T FUCK OVER YOUR COMPUTER THAN THE LEGIT COPY?think about it... |
We were just discussing this last night. It's absolutely ridiculous. I sure won't be paying $50 for a game I'll have for maybe 5 years. And, while you can call to get more installs, what if the company goes out of business? My boyfriend's had his copy of Heroes of Might & Magic (3, I think) through four computers now, and the company is no longer even around. He'd be SOL, and he still totally loves that game.
Completely ridiculous, and no Spore for me. It's a shame; I was really looking forward to it. :(

I know, my brother bought it... because he's an idiot. The game looks pretty fail, anyway. Too bad you can't return videogames that suck ass, anymore. :(

My brother bought it. Looks gay. I'll stick to the Spore Creatures game on the DS.

i play a 'cracked' version of the game and its awsome, the game is fun if you ever feel like getting into a creative game, its just that EA are buttfuckers they have screwed up the last batch of games they have released this year on critical things, like the internet co-op on Red alert 3 and Securom on Spore like you said, and because of this heaps of people are saying they are not going to buy any more EA games and some are saying they are just going to buy the sport ones (which are highly repetitive) so like wardich said EA will probably go out of business making Maxis out of business lol
